Client: Bella Vista Water District / FWA

Location: Sacramento River, Redding, CA

Background: The existing municipal pumping plant draws water year round from the Sacramento River below Keswick Dam. The existing facility used four large traveling screens for debris removal; however, these screens were inadequately sized (area too small and opening too large) to protect the endangered fish from entrainment and impingement impacts. The area adjacent to the intake is a critical spawning and rearing habitat area for several endangered species. A new screened intake facility is under construction.

Solution: ISI's retrievable brush-cleaned cylindrical screen system was selected as the project's preferred alternative. This "on-river" design was adapted to the existing structure to increase the screened surface area and to reduce the slot sizes to protect even the smallest fish in the area.

Client: Lower Yellowstone Irrigation District / COE / USBR / Ames Construction

Location: Yellowstone River, Glendive, MT

Background: A large diversion facility just upstream of Intake Dam diverts a significant proportion of the Yellowstone River flows. Unscreened diversion facility operations can result in fish losses, including losses of endangered Palid sturgeon; therefore, a new screened intake facility is under construction. The screened intake facility is part of a significant Yellowstone River fisheries restoration effort currently being implemented.

Solution: ISI's retrievable brush-cleaned cylindrical screen system was selected as the project's preferred alternative. This "on-river" screen design offered many advantages over other design concepts and resulted in overall cost savings.
The advantages of ISI's system included:
1) The on-river design keeps fish in the river rather than subject them to a fish bypass system;
2) The cylindrical screen design provided the necessary screen surface area with a reduced facility footprint compared to other concepts;
3) The retrievable design allows the screens to be safely raised above the dam during the non-irrigation season when ice flows and damage potential are significant;
4) The cylindrical screens will draw water from the middle of the water column where Palid sturgeon are less likely to be present;
5) The submerged screen design allows diversions to occur over large river stage fluctuations;
6) The retrievable screen design allows inspection and maintenance of individual screen units without shutting down the diversion facility operations.

Location: Sacramento River near Knights Landing, CA

Background: Three large slant-turbine pumps are being retrofitted with new Fish Screens to protect ESA salmon and steelhead species.

Solution: The Three conductor pipes are being replaced and combined into a common intake manifold. A single ISI retrievable brush-cleaned cylindrical screen system seats over this intake. The screen will be pulled to the building during the non-irrigation season

Client: Tehama-Colusa Canal Authority

Location: Red Bluff Diversion Dam, Sacramento River, Red Bluff, CA

Background: The TCCA needed a 500 cfs emergency pumping plant to supply water to its irrigators because a major diversion dam operation's use was restricted due to endangered species issues. The new diversion needed to pump from shallow water in a limited area. The divesion also needed to be designed, fabricated, and installed in less than 4 months.

Solution: ISI cooperatevely worked with the client's engineering firm, the pump manufacturer, and the fisheries agencies to develop a design-build solution. The final project used a piled structure to support 10 shallow intake plenums, the pump columns, and the cone screens. Each screen can divert 50 cfs with only 3 feet of water depth in the river. The structure was installed next to an existing sheetpile wall and did not interupt existing operations. ISI completed the design, fabrication, and installation in less than 3 months.

Location: Wells Dam, Columbia River, Chelan, WA

Background: The FERC permit required that a large state fish hatchery intake be upgraded to current fish screen criteria. The existing intake's shoreline mounted traveling screen did not have the required surface area or mesh size and also had an undesirable fish bypass. The new fish screen needed to be mounted on the intake pipeline entrance about 300 feet off shore and designed for a 150 cfs capacity. All controls needed to be powered and operated on shore in an existing control building with limited power.

Solution: ISI designed a large screen unit and intake adapter supported on piles with an adapter that mated to the existing 6-foot dia. concrete pipe. The screen unit was designed as a non-retrievable unit; however, its components can be removed or accessed easily by divers if necessary. The hydraulic lines and screen monitoring cables run inside the existing intake pipe and all the controls and power unit are housed in the existing building as required. The operating system and HPU operates on a 20-amp circuit.

Client: Reclamation District 999

Location: Sacramento River, Clarksburg, CA

Background: The RD999 operates a 42-inch siphon intake with a 100 cfs capacity in the environmentally sensitive California Bay-Delta. The existing unscreened intake was know to entrain a number of fish species and needed to be screened for the most sensitive fish species, including the tiny delta smelt. The intake is located on a flood control levee and the new facility could not disturb the existing levee area.

Solution: ISI designed a retrievable screen system with two large screen units that sealed over two new pipe openings. The design meets the conservative fish protection criteria for delta smelt (slot velocity less than 0.4 fps and slot width = 1.75 mm). The screen operates in a busy navigable waterway and did not require any levee modification. The screen can be retrieved during the non-irrigation season when flows can exceed 100KFS. The screen was installed in the wet with only an 8 hour irrigation outage.

Location: Sacramento River, Redding, CA

Background: The City of Redding's municipal intake draws up to 70 cfs from a critical spawning area of the endangered winter run chinook salmon. The city did not have funding to replace its pump station and intake, so a retrofit of the existing facility was needed so the intake would meet the state and federal fish screen criteria.

Solution: ISI designed and installed a series of six retrievable cylindrical screens that fit over the existing pump intakes on the intake tower. This design more than trippled the available intake surface area needed to meet the screen criteria in the shallow area. The construction did not interupt water deliveries of the cities year round operations and was completed without any major modifications to the existing facility. The City has realized significant cost savings and reliable operations while protecting the endangered salmon.

Background: Two new fish acclimation ponds are being constructed in the Okanogan River near Omak and Riverside. The water is diverted from river section that is typically less than 2 feet deep and is subject to heavy debris and ice conditions.

Solution: ISI provided two cone screens for the new pump station, allowing it to draw water from depths between 1 and 12 feet deep. A well water sprinkler system is used in conjunction with the effective brush cleaning system to prevent the intake from icing conditions should they occur. The critical intake operates year round in all river conditions.

Solution: ISI retrievable cylinder screen to pre-filter intake and prevent expected clogging issues

Client: Eldorado Irrigation District

Location: Alder Creek, Kyburz, CA

Background: FERC required that EID protect juvenile fish by providing a self cleaning screen at this powerplant intake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The existing site is very remote, subject to heavy debris loads, and has no power available

Solution: ISI is provided a cone screen to adapt to this shallow intake. The project components were flown in via helicopter in 2010. A propeller drive cleaning system is used to keep the screen free of debris when the diversion is operating.

Client: Sonoma Golf Club

Location: Intake Lagoon, Sonoma CA

Background: The golf course draws its water supply from an intake located in the center of a large pond fed by a local creek (1700 gpm). The pond's depth has decreased from 8 feet to 4 feet deep and weeds choked the intake and caused the filtration system to be plugged. Two floating intake screens even collapsed and a new design was required that did not require dredging the pond.

Solution: ISI installed a pile supported steel base with a connection to the existing intake pipeline that raised the intake to about three feet below the low water surface. A shallow cone screen was mounted over this base, allowing water to be drawn below the low water but above the sediment. The brushes effectively clean the screens and allow the pumps filters to work very efficiently. The cone screen option has significantly reduced pond and pump station maintenance while increasing water supply reliability.

Client: Greco Ranch / Shasta RCD

Location: Kalamath River, Yreka, CA

Background: Two pumps (3000 gpm) draw water from a shallow backwater. The existing pumps were originally screened with large perforated plate tube screens requiring manually cleaning. Both original screens collapsed and new screens with self cleaning was needed to continue pumping.

Solution: ISI designed and installed a retrievable cone screen to a new pump intake manifold. The two pumps draw water from one self-cleaned screen. The mechanical brushes have prevented heavy algae accumulations and plugging. The intake screen and piped manifold can also be hinged out of the water during the flood season for pretection.

Location: Mill Creek, Salem, OR

Background: A freeway improvement project required the relocation of a community water supply to the river. The new 1500 gpm shore mounted pump station needed to draw water from the river that has a large water level fluctuation (2 - 15 feet). The screen needed to be self-cleaning, durable, and operate even when water depths were less than 2 feet deep.

Solution: ISI provided a cone screen attached to a steel base connected to the submerged pipe entrance. The diversion was located in a small alcove along the rip rapped lined river section. The intake has withstood large flow events due to its strong and durable wedgewire and frame system. The screen also provides fish protection and meets all fish screen criteria.

Client: NRCS and Private Owner

Location: San Francisco Bay Delta

Background: An existing 2500 gpm siphon needed a fish protection screen as part of a wetland creation project. The screen needed to be self-cleaning; however, no power was available at the intake site.

Solution: ISI provided an "end-of-Pipe" cylindrical screen that bolted to the end of the intake pipe. The screen is cleaned with an internal and external brush system that operates when the diversion is flowing, turning an internal propeller drive unit. The unit has been functioning for the past four irrigation seasons with no interuption in service or external power required.
